Please clarify your question. Pugs were bred as companion dogs. You can see the history of every breed at AKC.com (org)

All dogs came from the wolf. Amazing, isn't it?

A really good answer to your question is found on the special "Nature: Dogs that Changed the World". It talks about all things dog. You can find it as a torrent for downloading or on the Nature web site.

pgs were originally companions, and thus, still are great playmates today, but many are in showing and just the likeness of the breed. THEY ARE SO UGLY, THEY ARE CUTE! PUG-UGLY= PUGGLY!
