*All dogs* go into heat first around 6 months, or later. Some are two years old before they have their first heat.
When she goes into heat, keep an especially good eye on her and do not let any males near her for about 3 to 4 weeks.

I agree with the other two posts - and would like to especially emphasize how important it is to get your puppy spayed before her first heat. Here is a link to a great site about spaying and neutering our pets:

As you can see, if your Shi Tzu is spayed before her first heat, she is only 0.05% likely to get breast cancer later on. If you wait until after her first heat, the risk goes up to 8%. If you wait until after her second heat, the risk is 26%, which is more than one in four! So, obviously, the sooner, the better.

If she goes into heat before you can get her spayed, be prepared for a messy, stressful few weeks. Every intact male in the neighborhood is going to try to get to her (and some of the neutered ones will try, too, but they aren't as much of a threat to her health!)

If she is accidentally bred, get her to the vet ASAP for a spay/abort. She is WAY too young to have puppies!

I hope this helps. Please get her spayed now. Good luck!
