The pet stores are full of toys that many dogs will quickly chew up into pieces they could choke on or cause intestinal blockages. If you are not there to watch, stick to sturdy stuff such as Nylabones and Kongs. Keep a close eye on chew toys and quickly discard anything that is coming apart in pieces. Rawhide is especially bad because it swells after being swallowed. I don't trust any of the consumable chews. The dogs just gnaw them down to a dangerous size too quickly. These problems are the worst with, but not limited to, large, aggressive chewers such as Labs.

I have a nylabone that has gone through 5 puppies now and is still in one piece.

Kelso

this is not for "hours" and is not strong/tough in the usual sense, but half-hours of fun to make them think for awhile -- we bought Kelso a JW ball, you put treats inside and it has a bit of a maze inside where he has to roll it every which way (not just straight) to get them to fall out. He really stays with it! He also has a Kong frisbee which he loves us to throw but will also throw it to himself outside and play for a long time. Kongs are the best and we freeze peanut butter or mashed potatoes or whatever in them and give them to him while we are eating so he has something to do. Good luck!

JW Pet Good Cuz/Bad Cuz Dog Toys

I believe someone else talked about these...

Hello, Molly is a tuff chewer. She likes to eat fabric, dog beds, toys, anything. She is a jack russell terrier, so destruction by chewing is a game. We buy the round ones of these JW Pet Good Cuz/Bad Cuz Dog Toys. They have squeakers in them, so the dogs love them. Our dog Daphne is a tad gentler, but not by much. We buy her the ones with shapes like a cat or duck. They are really tough rubber, but still have the fun squeaks going on. I've tried the squeakers made from tennis ball material, my dogs go right through them. They are not crazy about Kong unless there are treats in them. These are a great option for very playful dogs that love to chew. We replace them about every 6 months, but not because they are worn out - simply because there may be a puncture mark or they are filthy from dog mouth slobber. Petsmart usually has a big selection of colors, sizes, and shapes.
