Shandi

What would be the most suitable breed?

We adopted Shandi on Feb 1st. She had lived with another dog her whole life and here she is by herself. We are gone from 8am to 2:45pm 3-5 days a week. On the weekend someone is always home. She has a dog friend down the road who she loves to play with but she only sees him 3 times a week. She always tries to play with the cat but the cat just gets freaked out and runs away.

We might be moving in June and if we dog Shandi wont have any dog playmates. If we do move we are considering getting another dog for her. Which breed do you think would best suit us? I am looking for a dog that:
- is medium size
- can tolerate hot, humid weather
- can handle a rough dog
- little grooming required
- not to hyperactive
- gets along with cats and dog
- loves to play
- loves to swim

I realise that the last few points are depending on the dog not the breed. There are also 2 teenagers in the house. So which breed do you think would be most suitable for us?

MinPin! Around 10 pounds. I dont know about swim but Jack loves water. A little hyper but a nother dog to play with should calm it down. Loves heat and is easy to keep clean. With a lot of heat or huidity dont get a dog with a short snout like a pug. Its hard on there upper resperatory!

Well there can be really alot of breads like maybe the rottweiler, [strong, bold, dog that can handle climate change, outdoorsy, alot more...], i have a German Shepherd, he is great can tolerate, wont bite, plays lots of toys, deals with a cat [i thought itwould get nasty, guess what it didnt], he is a great dog, but the bad thing is that German Shepherds grow to be massive dogs, so a dog i would reccoment is the PODDLE, they can bark at times but are great u can research them at www.wikipedia.org or here at www.dogster.com

With all my thoughtness,

To me, this is one of those things that really depends more or less on the individual dog, and not the breed, really. Of course, you list things like hot weather and little grooming, so a short-coated dog would be best for you, obviously. But, in terms of loving to play, getting along with cats, can handle a rough playing dog, not too hyperactive, etc, that is really dependent on the actual dog, not the breed. You get a large range of personalities and traits within each breed.

If I were you, I'd consider going to the shelter to look for a dog. That way, you can see him and interact with him (or her!) along with Shandi first, and make sure there's a connection and a good match. You'll see so many different breeds that you won't be limited as much as if you try going to a breeder. Best part? You'll save a dog AND make room for another stray at the shelter.

Best of luck in your search!

I agree with Jack. Go to a shelter and see who is there. And if you get a slightly older dog, you won't have to go through the puppy stage of house training. Plus you'll have the opportunity to have Shandi meet the prospective playmate so you'll know if they get along.

Well what about a pup like Cherry? Looks like Shandi was totally enjoying having her around to play with. Our shelters always have staff/pit/lab/boxer mixes it seems like. They usually love kids.
Keep checking out your shelter, as long as you could find a dog who Shandi could get along with the rest will work out.
