:DD I had a Cocker/Doxie mix that would howl in the wee hours or when my cell phone rang. There was no wolf in her! Some dogs howl for communication or when they hear things like sirens. Other than the 2 AM howls, I used to laugh & enjoy the sound! Cute, dog!

"Howling gene"? Really? Is that some old blues guitarist? As Toto said...all dogs howl as a form of communication. Stanley Coren has a good book.. "How to Speak Dog." There is a good section in there about howling & barking. He is a good looking dog. Good luck

While I agree with the OP's dog being some sort of Shepherd mix, I strongly disagree with the howling being a wolf/husky behavior. ALL dogs can and do howl, some more than others. ALL of my toy poodles and Frenchies howl when I put them out each morning. No wolf in them, that's for sure!!! I also own a boarding kennel/daycare. Periodically, usually at least once a day, all the dogs go thru a sustained howling period. They are NOT howling because they miss someone or something, they are howling because it is an accepted form of communication between dogs...nothing more, nothing less, and it usually starts when they hear the nearby roosters begin crowing. Howling is also a common occurrence when groups of dogs are together at dog shows. MOST of these dogs in our daycare/boarding kennel are labs, poodles, cockers, etc., NONE of them are wolf or husky mixes!

Mmm, I don't really know how he is mixed but I indeed know this. Most dogs, when their pack leader or one of their pack members venture away, will be cautious and at the most part worried. Howling is a way of communication, as of a lost child in a toy store calling for its mom. "MOM!". So basically he is wondering where you are going, where you are, and why you are leaving him. I'm not saying all dogs do this behavior, but some or most depending on the dog. Most dogs just bark. Those whom look more wolf-like (In body structure, and/or color) may have a higher chance in the howling gene. Hope this helped!

As short as he is and his leg & feet stance looks like a beagle. They also howl loudly. Hard to say but German Shepherd markings are VERY dominant, check out Sasha (my dog's pic) but w/o cropped ears. Her markings looks like a mini Shepherd but she has a hound howl! See her sister, Abby w/Setter mother. He's adorable anyway!
