What is the difference between The Staffordshire and the Pitbull?

I was trying to find out the answer to this question and ran across this on the internet:

http:// www. faqs.org /qa/qa-1627.html (w/o spaces)

Some people say the Staffie is bigger, others say the Pitbull is bigger. Some are saying Pitbulls aren't even a real breed, but Dogster lists the Staffordshire and the Pitbull as two different breeds (under the list of selecting your dog's breed). Most of my friends have what they call "pitbulls". I have one friend who has a rather large "pitbull", who weighs nearly 100 lbs, and is almost three feet tall. Then I have another friend who has "pitbulls" that don't go over 60-70 lbs and aren't more than 20-25 inches tall. (That's just an estimate.. I'm not really sure how tall they are...) One of the dogs this friend has has a different face than the other "pitbulls" Her face is a little rounder and flatter than the others. Is she a Staffie and the others Pitbulls, or is it the other way around? Someone help clear the confusion! Thanks! :

"Pit Bull" is a generic term, which people tend to apply to any dog that looks like an American Pit Bull Terrier, or APBT. Thus the words "Pit Bull" themselves refers to not one, but several breeds. Staffordshires are closely related to the APBT.

I was told be an American Staffordshire Terrier owner that AmStaffs--a nickname for the breed, are smaller than APBTs. While I cannot currently provide any backup for this, the Staffies I have seen do indeed seem smaller than APBTs.

I'm sure some one else will do this better, but, pitbull is a generic term much like retriever or setter or shepherd. There are purebreds with registries and individual breed standards for many of the "pit" breeds. An American Strafforshire Terrier is a separate breed registered with the AKC. The American Pit Bull Terrier has a breed standard and is registered with the UKC. There are also Bull Terriers and miniature Bull Terriers, both of which are sometimes referred to as Pit bulls as well. All of these individual breeds have breed standards which define the ideal type within that breed. They all have individual differences which make them unique to their breed and different from each other, just as Labradors and Goldens and Flat coats are unique breeds among the retrievers and Irish and Gorden and English are unique breeds within the setters.

yep right on c&c. I was just going to paste the two definitions from Wikpedia.
The are different in there.
The staffordshire can appear slightly different.
There is so many wonderful mixes out there waiting for homes.
I use to have a pitbull mix and I just adored him. He was a great dog. And such a love bug.
Some of the larger pitbulls like your friend are being mixed with a neopolitian mastiff, and they are trying to start a breed of their own. They call them Ban dogs.
I don't think they should do this. That may be what he is, but sounds very tall. Usually they are about 24 in tall and are more pitbull looking.

I am sorry forget wikipedia!!!! "Pit Bull" is a genaric term, but it was used as nickname for any "bully breed" usually the staffie variety thrown in to a "pit" to fight. Thus Pit Bull. Staffordshire Terries are short but the Staffordshire Bull Terrier are much more short and squat weighing in at only 38 pounds . There is a "breed" considered the APBT American Pit Bull Terrier. They are taller and leaner with long features like muzzles and legs. As you can see above it is NOT considered a breed by the AKC. The term Pit Bull has just become so main stream. Generally dogs that are short and squat are staffies and this is what they were bred to look like. Some people breed for the big huge ''pits" they obviously do not care about the breed standard.

agree with cookies n cream, staff is the AKC recognized "pit" name. only pits registered and recognized with them are legitimately am.staffs.and they do not recognize "reds" except on a few very rare occasions.same dog though still.pits come in MANY shapes and sizes.only true difference in breed are between english and american.check out the APBA for more info.pretty helpful.
