It depends on the genes really. Some dogs just go grey earlier than others, just like some people do. Ty is 7 years old and started going grey from around 18 months. If you take a look at some of his pictures on his page you'll see how it's spread from his muzzle and to most of his face. His body is also flecked with grey hairs. It's totally normal and nothing to worry about.

Dogs just get older, unfortunately. Chase is only about 3.5 years old and her muzzle is getting pretty white.

Some dogs just start to grey early, just like some people will start to get grey hair when they are young. Many times it has nothing to do with age. Many of my dogs startto get grey around the nose and head at about that age. I heard once , it is just the hair going to the color of grey because of a lack of something in the hair and it is just going to grey because the body no longer produces the stuff to keep a hair that color. Maybe someone else has a more medical explaination then this.

Allergies can cause a dog to prematurely grey. My dog Carbon started going grey at 5 years old and a dog (also with allergies) that a friend owns went completely grey in the face by 2 years. Some breeds will grey sooner than others as well so depending on the genetic makeup of your pup he/she could just be going grey.
