It may be typical arthritis since his is an older dog. Put him on glucosamine chondroitin to help keep the fluid in the joints. Also, massage is a great way to help relieve the stiffness and improve joint/muscle circulation. I personally like to use PETfection Joint Massage Oil, which is 100% Organic and Non Toxic, and is made for arthritic hips and stiff joints. You can check it out at www.myPETfection.com for more info. Finally, another option is to always go to the vet and have them take an xray and make sure nothing else is wrong. Hope this helps!

I agree with Wyatt on glucosamine/chondroitin. My last guy (gsd-lab) started to slow down around 8 yrs old & after putting him on a holistic supplement it did wonders. He was almost like a puppy for awhile. At 12 he tore his ACL, which will also present with lameness. This needs xrays & surgery. A full vet check for seniors would be a good start. Good luck

Your dog needs to see a vet for diagnosis... Rotties and GSD's are both prone to bone cancer and that tends to start most often at his age and in the front legs. If that is his problem treatment needs to be started ASAP, if not, you will find out what is and can also begin NSAIDS, etc., if it IS arthritis or some other inflamatory process. Glucosomine supplements are not going to hurt, are a good idea BUT they do not take the place of a good veterinary exam.

Greenies has a new product out that has glucosomine in it. It is specially made for dogs with joint problems. I buy it for my 15 year old and he loves them. But I also agree with a vet visit to just make sure it is anything serious.
