waking up in middle of night

Recently, my dog (Husky/German Shepherd, age 2.5) has been waking us up in the middle of the night. He doesn't seem to need to go out, so we don't know why he's doing this. He has always slept downstairs on his own bed and has never shown any interest in sleeping with us or even in the same room, so we can't figure out why he has started this behavior or how to stop it. Any suggestions?
