Treatments for a Husky with a heart mummer?

The vet told me that my Husky has a stage 3 or 4 heart mummer and suggested that I take him to a specialist to see get an EKG done. I have not seen any thing out of the norm when he gets excited or runs, and I can not take him to a specialist right now. I am looking for other treatments that I can use for now, like the proper amount of exercise, the right diet and possible supplements, and things I should avoid.

You should always make sure your dog is getting an adequate amount of exercise. Depending on where you live, you may have to be cautious about long walks or lots of activity, even in the winter months. (Here in Arizona, Huskies don’t do very well in the winter because it doesn’t really get cold enough – so even a short walk can leave them panting). Making sure your dog maintains a healthy weight is also important. You don’t want to put any more strain on the heart that you have to, so keeping your dog healthy is very important. What kinds of exercise are you currently giving your dog? What does he eat?

I think that if/when you can, taking your dog to a specialist would be beneficial. Unfortunately, this is a difficult question to give a specific answer for. Each dog’s condition is different. The EKG will determine the answers to the questions that you have, which is probably why your vet wasn’t able to answer them for you. It will give the vet an idea of what exactly is going on with the heart, and will be able to help determine a solution for your dog.

Please message me if you have any questions. Best of luck with your dog.

My 11 year old American Eskimo was diagnosed with a murmer and this was undetected by two other vets, He was going to have a tooth extraction and my new vet suggested an ultra sound and ekg, often they will travel to the vets office and it and takes a short time and depending on your dogs demeanor. After both test he was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and stage 3 murmur. I really had no choice but to have his tooth pulled which btw ended being 9 teeth and he was under for 3 hours, That was our biggest concern, I was advised his weight being 20lbs was a HUGE FACToR IN him waking and being fine. HE'S FULL OF ENERGY BUT I STILL MONITOR HIS PLAY TIME AND EXCERISE, SALT FREE DIET IS IMPORTANT. OH, I SHOULD SAY HIS FIRST VET TOLD ME HIS HEART WAS SUPER STRONG, THRILLED I GOT A SECOND OPINNION. DON'T FORGET AGE IS ALSO A FACTOR, HOWEVER, WITH THE RIGHT TREATMENT HE WILL GO ON FOR YEARS TO COME
BEST WISHES
