took in stray nursing mom and desperately need advise
im an expat working in Iraq, today i found a stray dog nursing her 4 puppies and couldn't leave her on the street like that.
i took her and 4 puppies with me in the house, ive been looking for a dog here for a while and this looked just like a Godsend...
the mom looks super skinny and seriously malnourished, the puppies look like just a few days old.
after feeding her ground beef and tuna she calmed down and got comfortable at the house.looks like a golden retriever but mixed.
she is feeding the puppies almost all the time and Im worried that she doesnt get enough nutrients in her to pass on to puppies.
ill try to find a vet to come to the house and check them out but that might take days.any advise on what i should feed her and how many times a day?
i have never had a nursing dog so totally a new territory for me.i dont even know if i should give mom and her puppies a good wash or not?
ANY advise is greatly appreciated as it will save the life of a mom and her 4 beautiful pups

Its been a really long time since i've been around a nursing mom. Try posting this on the health forum on this site. There are more people there with a lot of knowledge. They can also answer you back and forth there which they can't do here. Good for you for taking her and her pups in. :) Good luck with them. I wish I had some advice for you.

If you can get it, feed her a commercial puppy food, because it's more nutrient-dense than adult dog food. Let her eat as much as she wants- probably just keep refilling the bowl as she eats it down. If you don't have dog food, feed her whatever you've got until you can get some. Raw meat is great, especially with bones in for calcium. Dogs can also eat most human foods like cooked meats, bread, rice, veggies, cheese, yogurt, etc. Avoid onions and chocolate, and anything spicy.
I think you could bathe the pups if you just use warm water, maybe some mild shampoo, and don't let them get chilled afterward. Treat then like human babies- gently.
And thank you for rescuing this little family!

A regular old puppy food will do the trick, but do not let her free feed on the food, a dog that has suffered malnutrition can and often will eat until it makes them sick. If you don't have access to dog food, ground beef/ chicken/ turkey or lamb and rice, cooked with no seasonings would do well.
I suggest 3 meals a day, around 2-3 cups per meal... and then once mom weens the puppies they can start on the same food as mom, just add water to soften for them until they work their way up to hard kibble.
Baths would be fine, if you don't have dog shampoo a little bit of dish soap will do the trick... for the puppies though, if they are especially dirty, give them a warm rinse and allow them to dry in a warm, draft-free area, but for the most part, mom will take care of their cleaning!
