Yuki Joy

to cut or not to cut

I really want to keep my shih tzu hair really long and pretty but summer is coming soon and were I live the temperature get really really hot around July. Me and my mom were talking about taking my shih tzu to the groomers to cut his hair (not shave, just cut keeping it kinda of long but not too long) to keep him fresh during the hot summer and the rest of the year keep the hair long. Is this a good idea or my shih tzu hair should never be cut no matter how hot the summer gets?

It’s fine to get Yuki’s hair cut short. I keep my shih tzus’ coats longer in the winter and shorter in the summer.

Short coats are easier to maintain as they do not require as much daily brushing and are less prone to mats. A short coat will also help to keep Yuki cool during the hot summer months, which is especially important for shih tuzs as they are very sensitive to high temperatures, and can suffer heatstroke quite easily. On the other hand, a short coat will require more frequent trimming as the hair will grow back quickly.

According to official breed standards “excessive trimming” is seen as a fault, but this would only be relevant if Yuki Joy were a show dog. If Yuki enjoys spending time outside I would suggest that you get his hair cut short for the summer months. Also, look online for a picture that shows a shih tzu with the style of cut you want. Take the picture with you to the groomers. This will help to make sure that Yuki’s hair is cut to your liking. Good Luck!

It doesnt hurt to cut your shih tzus hair short nor will it hurt to keep it at full length. I am not a believer of hair short =cooler in the heat of summer. In fact the longer hair protects their skin from over exposure to the sun and shades them keeping them cooler. In the hot hot weather my dogs in their long coat are fine when outside and my sisters boxers with their no hair have trouble when outside even for short periods. Shih tzus look adorable short and long. Their long hair as I am sure you already no requires alot of up keep so if you want something easier for yourself then getting a cute cut is a good idea to prevent any matting.
