Thick crusty scabs on ears!!! HELP!!

My 11 year old maltese has very thick crusty scabs on the tips of his ears, and the remaining skin on the inside of his ears is kind of flaky(akin to a dandruff appearance). When the wounds first appeared i thought it was some relation to the fleas we'd been battling, but over a week after the fleas were eradicated (with a combination of baths, drops, and bombing-which i was not pleased i had to resort to)the scabs remain and i would even venture to say that they've gotten worse. Does anyone know what i'm looking at? mange? allergic reaction? mites? and does anyone know any treatment i can use until i get him to the vet? thanks bundles!

It could be any of those things, but no one will be able to tell except for the vet. These wounds sound terribly uncomfortable, though, so hopefully you can get there very soon.

Without a diagnosis we cannot possibly recommend any treatment as what is right for one condition is most likely contraindicated in another.
Since we are not vets here NOR do we have the ability to examine your dog and/or do any testing necessary to come to that diagnosis, I would strongly suggest you get him to the vet ASAP so it can be determined just what the problem is, and proper treatment can be started.
I know if MY dog had what sounds like serious, open sores on both ears I would have him at the vets immediately. Anything less is bordering on cruelty.
