there is a golden retriever and basset hound mix. Are there any concerns I should have? Would it be a good dog to have

why not? a good dog is any breed and how you train it whether it be a older dog or a pup.

It depends on the dog, honestly. Do you think a Golden Retriever or Basset Hound (purebred) would be good choices for you?

The rule I've heard with mixes, if there is something about EITHER parent breed you cannot deal with, don't get a crossbred, since you don't know which traits will come from each parent. (This applies more to puppies than adult dogs, since adults are fully formed and you're not guessing how they'll turn out.)

Also, assuming this dog has Basset-type short legs, you should do some research about this mutation- it can have serious health consequences. Check out this link for more info about short-legged dogs:

It's obviously not a death sentence, but you have to be careful about what you let the dog do, and know what to do in case of spinal injury (very common in these breeds.)

Good luck, maybe this dog is perfect for you, maybe not.
