Apollo

super course hair and chewing on feet.

my mom is trying to find ways to make my coat nice and silky soft like my house sisters. we get combed or brushed just about everyday and get baths atleast 1xmonth. my coat is so course and straw like (but shiny)and hold the dirt like crazy.shes tried show sheen, dog conditioners, and baby detanglers including oatmeal formula shampoo. i also eat skin&coat formula food. i have also always chewed my feet raw. in between the toes and inside the pad. the docs have given antibiotics at times but no true relief. i dont itch or scratch otherwise. my mom is convinced these 2 issues are related. shes used lidocane creams (for pets), foot powders, triple antibiotic, no-chew sprays and all. but i keep doing it. shes even tried using my e-collar from getting neutered but i find a way to get it off. she is trying to find natural ways to heal and comfort me even trying benedryl-b/c the docs dont know what it is. they say my fur is so straw like b/c im a male. shes now trying local raw honey in my fd

Baths on too often a basis can dry out the natural oils in a dog's fur, perhaps this is the problem or part of it.
Also could be diet. What brand do you feed?
Here's a thread on what to basically look for in a pet food:

Also, have you tried going to another vet? Not all vets are alike.

Pepper

The foot chewing sounds like allergy to foods. The straw coat sounds like Thyroid, but allergies may be to blame there too.
Try a food elimination diet. Avoid steriods for the itch as long as possible. Let the baths go, water can dry out the skin.
Omega 3 supplements.
Apollo looks part Border Collie. The hair coat on BC's is more harsh than Aussies.

Petri

Check out www.mypetfection.com. PETfection has 100% Organic and Non Toxic products.... for the skin and coat you can use their Deodorizer/Allergy Spray daily and while brushing. It will help to moisturize the fur and skin. Their shampoo is also very gentle, so it won't overdry her skin, but it is really amazing out getting rid of the dirt and grease! It rinses super easy too so you won't have left over shampoo stuck in her fur (which can cause itchiness). You can also start giving her coconut oil every day (1 TBLS)... this is similar to flax seed and is excellent for the coat/skin. For the paws, use PETfection's Paw Cream or Hot Spots/Wound Spray. Both will heal up any dryness, reduce inflammation, and relieve itchiness. Just up to you if you would rather use a spray or cream. Everything really works fantastically, so definitely check the website out. Good luck!
