Should I let them breed or not?
I have 2 Red Healers and they are everything to me. Jack is 3.5 and Mickey is 1.5 years. They are brothers. I did not have them fixed. I just dont really believe in doing that to any living creature. Im wondering should I allow them to mingle with there female kind? Is there any problems keeping them Virgins or should they let there dogs out every now and then. I'm writing this because I cought Jack humping his lil brother fully erect. I scolding him for doing so, he seemed very s suprized and has not done it since, about 3 weeks now.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Gordy

I agree with the others, 'cept I don't believe in pushing neutering as long as people are responsible about keeping an intact dog, keeping him away from any and all intact females.
Breeding--best left to those who have thoroughly informed themselves on the matter and who have the reason in mind of keeping their dog's breed healthy and consistent--which requires a fully-health-tested dog that has been proven to be physically sound and who fits his breed standard exceptionally well.

Take a ride to your local animal shelter and ask what their kill rate is, and look into the eyes of the dogs in the cages, half of which will probably never see the light of day again. Then tell me you don't believe in neutering.
You should not allow your dogs to "mingle with females". What working titles do your dogs have? OFAs on hips? CERF on eyes? If you have no idea what I'm talking about, NO BREEDING. Please, please, PLEASE leave it to people who know what they are doing and not unknowingly passing on all sorts of genetic problems down the line to damage the breed. If you are not breeding with a purpose in mind (that is, to improve the breed) then they should not be breeding. Breeding is not just throwing Dog A and Dog B together to get puppies.
Lastly, leaving your dogs intact increases their chances of testicular cancer among other things. I'd just neuter. Your dogs will be less frustrated, and you won't be contributing to BYBs and overpopulation. Thanks for reading.

NO, you should not let them breed.
First, humping is not necessarily a sexual thing, it can also be a dominance thing. Humping means absolutely nothing.
Second, there is absolutely zero reason to breed dogs unless it is done responsibly. Responsible breeding entails dogs being at least 2 years old, matching the breed standard, DNA testing, OFA, CERF, showing (and titling) your dog in conformation and working (and titling) your dog in a type of activity its breed was created for.
If you can't breed responsibly, there is no reason TO breed. There are 6 Million dogs surrendered to shelters in the US each year. 4 million of those are euthanized because they are not adoptable. There simply aren't enough homes.
Get your dogs FIXED. You won't have to worry about them breeding and you also rule out testicular cancer and other health issues. The dogs don't CARE if they are neutered or not and will be the SAME in temperament after neuter.

The humping you saw has nothing to do with unfulfilled urges to mate. Even neutered dogs will do that. It is certainly no excuse to let your dogs breed just because you're afraid their desires might be frustrated!

Please get your dogs neutered, or at the very least, do NOT let them breed. There are too many unwanted dogs in shelters as it is.

Humping is done out of boredom, stress, in play, etc...It isn't by any means always sexual.
With that said please have your dogs neutered...It is better for their health & helps to not contribute to the plight over over crowded shelters & dogs dying everyday because of it!

local animal shelters are FULL of dogs that were the product of ppl who just "allowed thier dogs to mingle" ... Milloins of dogs are put to death every year b/c they cant find homes. WHY would you want ot ADD to the numbers.
Nutering will also cut down on your dog's health problems later in life. Testicular cancer in the biggest one. In a lot of cases it will also help to remove the dominance drive that we all refur to as "humping".
Breeding should ONLY be done to improve the breed and it should be done ONLY by ppl who know what they are doing. Great breaders have the experence to handle all of the problems and issues during the breeding, pregnency, and birth of the pups.
Please. reconcider having your boys nutered. If for no other reason, for thier health later in life.

Your post suggests you do not know enough about your dogs or dog breeding to even consider that at this point. You need to do much research and learning before breeding is an option for you.
Start by learning about the breed you have - they're called HEELERS aka Australian Cattle Dogs or ACDs (they herd cattle, they don't work medical miracles). Start here:
www.wolfweb.com.au
Learn about the breed standard and how working ACDs are evaluated - if your dogs don't fit either of those well, they are not breeding candidates. Poorly bred ACDs are prone to temperament problems that make them difficult to find homes for.
Next, learn as much about dog breeding as you can. It's more than just putting two dogs together. Here's a place to start:
www.woodhavenlabs.com
What you can do with your dogs right now is make sure they get enough exercise. Tired dogs are good dogs. Also try herding, agility, obedience, or some other dog sport.
