Should I call the shelter to pick up a stray?
When we were on a walk with Cooper today we ran into a stray female. We've seen her around the apartment complex for a few weeks now and she doesn't have a collar & seems very timid around people. We stopped to see if she was friendly and she immediately got along with our pup.
We aren't able to take this sweet girl in ourselves -- pet restrictions where we live -- but don't want to see her get hurt (we live right off of a highway). We also don't want her having any puppies, and it looks to me like she already has at some point. The shelter in our community is NOT a no-kill shelter and I'm afraid if we take her there she might not have long enough to get adopted.
She seems healthy, she's very sweet...any advice? Should I get pictures and post her on here as an adoptable pet?

That would great if you put up an adoption profile for her. And I do agree, if its not a no-kill shelter, I wouldn't want to take a dog up there either. You might need to take her to the vet if you can try to get near her and see if she's micro-chipped cause you never know, there could be someone out there looking for her. If you put her up for adoption here on Dogster, you might want to take her to get a check-up at the vets to make sure she's free of fleas, mites, ticks, ect. Good luck! Hope this helps!

If you are able to keep her for the time being, you should try and post pictures in hopes she'll be adopted. Put an ad in your local paper in hopes someone will have a place in their heart for a dog. You could try taking her to a vet and getting her scanned, maybe she has a chip, dogs can roam for miles. If you are not able to keep her, unfortunately your only solution may be the shelter, this might be her chance to find a home. Living on the street is very hard especially near a highway and having another litter is heartbreaking. I volunteer at our local shelter and yes they do put animals down but they do everything in their power to get them adopted to loving families, but not enough homes to go around. Good luck to you.

I think you should try to find her a home. Dogster is a great place to post doggies up for adoption, and you will be helping her have a better life. You could also try putting an add in your local paper for a found dog, most of the time the paper will print those for free. Try to leave some food for her somewhere in the parking lot, and some water, that will keep her around, and away from the highway until you find her owners, or a new home. Good luck.

I am so glad that you want to help this dog. I love animals! I just want to share one thing with you about helping strays: if you take on any part of feeding, caring for the animal, then the dog "becomes your dog". I was informed by animal authorities that once someone feeds a stray they in a sence become the owner and can be liable for the dog. That makes it sad for people that want to help. You can call the city to pick up the dog but then you don't get to know if it makes it to a home. A true delemma if you are on a limited income and can't afford fees for a stray. We had a pack problem and therefor had some conversations with the animal control officer and learned this. If I could I would go ahead and help the little fella, I just hate to see beautiful animals thrown away (or lost). Good Luck and thank you for caring.
