Separation Anxiety in Rescue Dog
I recently adopted a young male Lab & he is having bad separation anxiety. He cries, barks and throws himself against the door when I leave or even shut the door of the room he's in. He gets plenty of exercise & attention! I have to go back to work in 4 days and am desperate. Here are some things I've tried:
-UltraSonic Egg No Bark wall mount (emits frequencies when he barks..NOT a shock collar)
-GNC Calm Chewables
-Walks & feeding before I leave (this hasn't changed)
-Interactive toys & chew toys
-TV on
-Blanket with my scent
-Xanax (prescribed by my vet...small dosage. I'm not into pills!)
Nothing is helping & it breaks my heart to hear him wail, but I always wait until he stops. Does anyone have some different strategies than the obvious? I'm desperate-- I love my boy!

it sounds like your pups toys aren't cutting it? my rottie was like that every time i had to leave for class he would cry, bark and start chewing on the door. I read about this toy "the kong" well I did a little research and got the dogzilla ball that dispenses treats(a little bit cheaper than the kong) and let me tell you it did the trick. you can get one at any walmart or pet stores. you have to put the treats he cannot resist though. try it out once before you leave and see if it will actually keep him busy. then try it in another room and close the door to see if it still works. now my rottie is able to sleep next to my bed on the floor at night all night long. is your pup allowed to do this?. labs are companion dogs much like rottie's they don't like to be alone at all. they tend to need to be around if not next to their human owner all the time. Hope i helped. Good luck!

I also have a rescue dog with seperation anxiety. Nothing I seemed to do worked and I was getting ready to move into an apartment and was desperate for something. I did talk to a dog trainer and he suggested putting her in doggy day care a couple of times a week to let her have a life outside of me. I haven't done that just yet, but I did buy the dreadful shock collar. It's something I really didn't want to do, but I didn't have a lot of options left. For my dog, she learned after the third bark. So while I do feel bad about those three shocks, she doesn't even whine anymore while it's on. I'm not sure if the battery is working anymore, I think just the association of the collar on keeps her quiet.
I do understand your hesitance, but coming from a dog mom that treats her pup like a child, it did wonders for us and I love it. I do also have her in a crate to keep her from tearing things up or hurting herself. It's like having a whole new baby :) Hope this helps. Good luck!
