Pug puppy grooming?

I have a jug puppy, mix between jug and jack russell terrier. She has the black nails like the digging nails on a jrt but I was wondering is there anything special I need to do to groom her besides wash her and brush her. My vet told me black nails usually don't need to be trimmed as much as white because they break off themselves.

You could start brushing her teeth- the best time to do this is now, because she's young and easy to get her used to it.

Like Toto, I have seen a lot of dogs with overgrown black nails. Bruno has black nails and I certainly still have to trim them!

The only dogs I've seen that didn't need nail trimming were sled dogs that run outside a lot and wear down their nails on their own. Most pet dogs don't run that much and spend their time indoors on carpet that doesn't wear down the nails at all.

The only difference between black nails and clear nails is the lack of pigment in the clear ones. The black ones need to be trimmed just as often as the clear ones.
The reason people think they don't is that you cannot see the quick in the black ones that is visible in the clear ones. Because of this, clear ones tend to look "white" on the end part without the quick, and therefore look longer.
As a groomer I end up having to trim way more black nails than clear ones since many people trim the clear ones themselves.
If nails are breaking off it generally means there is something wrong with the dog's diet, resulting in brittle nails. Low thyroid almost always results in brittle nails and/or nails where the actual nail breaks away from the quick resulting in frequent split nails and exposed, sore or bleeding quicks.
