Nail Trimming

Ok so here is the thing, I was trying to trim another dogs nails that are REALLY long (there like all curvy and stuff) now this is new to me because I am used to trimming sunny’s nails that are cut once a week. So here is my question;

In the nail there is the pink/red little thing that is very easy to see and recognize as the quick, this goes about ˝ way up the nail. Then for the rest of the nail is this white stuff (in some dogs I have also seen clear, hollow nail after this) but my question is if the white stuff is part of the quick and if it will hurt if I cut it. The only thing I am really worried about is that I think the dog might bite me if I hurt him.

I am really sorry if this question does not make sense please paw mail me and I can try to explain further.

Thank you sooooo much for any answers,
sunny

I think I understand. Yes you can cut the white or clear part. Just stay back a little from the pink clear.

With regular cutting, the quick should recede allowing you to cut the nails shorter and shorter.

This dog might have to go the groomers.
My boston has a nail on each back foot that needs special care. For some reason they do curve.
The quick in these types of nails are longer.
You can hit them as the nails can not be trimmed normally or as short as other nails.
I would be very careful you can probe gently with a small round probe to see where the quick is.
My boston's nails are also black and boy are they tricky. I just mainly trim them every week a little bit to keep them from growing into the pad. Some breeds like the King Charles breed have this too.

SUNSHINE

best bet is to trim the clear part and then go back and snip a tiny bit off at a time using one nail as a guide for others. As far as being bitten, if the dog has really long nails, it probably is NOT used to having it's nails trimmed. Have the owner buy a muzzle (they have nice soft fabric ones now) and use that. better safe than sorry, and while you are at it give the owner a little lesson and let him/her try a few nails. everyone should know how to trim nails and all dogs should become accustomed to it.
