Mysterious Puppy Deaths?

Family members of mine have had two puppies for about a month and a half now. Both have been very healthy and playful. About 4 weeks ago they adopted a lost(unclaimed) puppy. They said he had not wanted to eat and didn't want to play middle of last week, but was fine by the end of the week. In the last few days the other two puppies were playful but didn't eat much, stools may have been a lil runny. Before they could make the vet appointment...one passed away and soon the other one. As far as I know all of the puppies have had shots and were healthy until the quick symptoms.
About 4 months ago when they first tried to adopt 2 puppies they also passed away with similar symptoms.
They are quarantining the puppy and older dog for now and cleaning the play thoroughly as well as investigating for any toxins. I don't feel it safe, might spread to my dogs if I come by to see if I can find out if they got into something.
Any advice for them, please.

Did they take the dead puppy to the vet for a necropsy? At least a test to rule out parvovirus? It's deadly, it can persist in the soil indefinitely (meaning if a dog ever had it there before, new puppies could contract it). It can kill VERY quickly. Sometimes vaccination is not effective.

I would ask the vet's opinion here, and if it's not too late she should examine the bodies too. No way to know if it's a disease or poisoning without a necropsy.

I recently heard of a litter of three 12 week old puppies who suddenly were weak and two of them died... necropsy showed herpes infection. One of the pups survived but has damage to it's eyes.
Herpes is dependent on the immune system... if it's properly developed there will be no symptoms and no issues. It rarely affects older dogs.

How sad, and weird. They must feel nervous about the remaining dogs.

They should inform the place where they got the puppies, no doubt the disease started there.

BLEACH everything.
And yes - keep your dogs away!

Howard

The dogs have probably gotten into something around the house, that's what it sounds like to me. They have probably messed in something or eaten something. Check around the house and outside to look around.

However, you said all the puppies have gotten their shots. Vaccines, rabies shots, and all the other shots can cause sickness or death. I would highly recommend not getting any shots for your dog.

Their are natural supplements for dogs that you can give. If you could create a Dogster account I could paw-mail you and give you information.
