My puppy is having an episode of heaving? throat spasm/hiccups??

My pup was outside playing and suddenly started hiccuping or heaving (best i can descrbe it as a throat spasm, much like a hiccup but not in his belly like a normal ) then he started licking his nose, kind of drooling and had watery eyes. He was acting like something was wrong. It lasted for several minutes then went away. Any one else experience this or know what it may be?

Is it possible he was choking on something? I know I get watery eyes if I have trouble clearing my throat, or cough a lot.

The other, less likely, possibility is a seizure. Both people and animals can appear exhausted and stressed after a seizure, which would go along with the drooling, licking and watery eyes.
Keep an eye on him to see if this ever happens again. If he is unaware of you and everything else during and immediately after an episode like this, then it is most likely a seizure. You may want to check with your Vet. next week.

It sounds like he was choking on something to me. It's normal for puppies to have hiccups from time to time but this sounds different.

They CAN have throat spasms which cause them to lick a lot, either their nose or lips or at the air during what appears to be a sort of "swallowing" attack. That's similar to hiccups. If he's fine now, and you have checked in his mouth for any foreign objects, I'd consider it a one time thing. If he has any other symptoms or does it again, either now or later on down the road, a vet trip is in order.

He could conceivably still have something in his esophagus (they are very long in dogs) or he could have a congenital malformation of his esophagus (rare, but needs to be diagnosed by a vet.)

I think though that Gus is most likely just fine. Puppies are sensitive and this is just one of those things that sometimes happens. You have to just be vigilant in watching him. Good luck!

Mom has to give me doggy allergy medicine from the vet this time of year because of that. Well, what I do is reverse sneezing-not sure if thats what Gus is doing though. If he continues to do it than I would check with your vet!

Just like humans pups can have allergies to!

I would take him to the vet. The vet can open his mouth and see if he has any excess tissue inside the air ways blocking his air.
If there is any problems the dog can not outgrow there is lazer surgery to unblock it. It is not that big worry now with all the advance treatments out there.
So, to be on the safe side I would take him to the vets so they can access the problem:)
