Licking the face can go back to the time of dogs being wild, they would lick the face of the leaders of the pack as kind of a submissive behavior. Also in the wild, the younger pups would lick the mothers face to get her to bring up food for them to eat. I guess in a way this is a throw back to the behavior of dogs in the wild.

Some dogs just do that. I think one possible reason is because he wants a taste of what you've been eating. Mine actually likes to taste saliva...gross, eh? It's also been said that dogs like to lick human skin because the sweat glands can leave a salty taste.

Just about every puppy I've met loves to lick, especially faces. But many grow out of it as they age. My dogs are now 1 and 4 years old, and do not lick faces anymore.
Just something to wait out. You can try to discourage them, keep them away from your face.
