My jack russell is terrified of the daylight hours

Arnold hides under the bed all day till dusk. He became scared for the first time on the interstate as a semi passed us. After that he would shake at home when he heard any large truck, UPS, garbage etc. We left the city and moved to a very rural area and at first he was great. Suddenly he began hiding under the bed all day and only coming out at dusk like nothing is wrong. I cant even coax him out with steak. We now live in the woods and rarely hear a vehicle, I want him to be able to walk in the woods with me and my other 15yr. old JRT beagle mix. He is missing out on so much and the fact that he is so scared all day really bothers us. He is 1 1/2 yr. Please help!

Hi,
1st thing to do is to get a physical. The problem may or may not have anything to do with the previous problem. It may be that his eyes are hurting and reactive to the light or an ear infection or anything.

Will he come out after dark? If so, once you make sure he doesn’t have any physical issues, start walking him just at dark. Once he is looking forward to the walk make it a few minutes earlier, eventually it will be dusk and then late afternoon when you are walking.
If it really has something to do with the light, walking a few minutes a day earlier might help. If there is some reason that he doesn’t want to go out and it has nothing to do with the light, you will have to try something different. I’m not sure what, but eliminate physical causes and the light thing 1st.
Good luck

Dieta

I was thinking at first this dog was old and had maybe some caracts or something.
My little dog who is getting old doesn't like bright sunlight but he does play outside if I go out.
So, I would take him into the vet's.
Maybe consider an eye and ear check.
He could just be sick in some way. Shut the bedroom doors so he can not hide maybe you can break up the habit by changing his routine entirely, good luck
