My dog has been coughing up white frothy mucus on and off for the past couple of days. What could this be?

My dog had her annual vet visit about 4 months ago and received all of her annual shots/vaccines. She has been coughing up small amounts of white frothy mucus over the past few days. Other than her productive cough she isn't acting any different. She is about 3 years old and is still playful and happy. She has had normal bowl movements and appetite. She hasn't been drinking as much water but we have been floating her food to help with water consumption. We want to take her to the vet but we dont have a lot of money right now to pay for another vet bill. If it could this be something serious though we want to catch it early and get her taken care of. Any suggestions?

Coughing is a bad thing, get her to her vet.

How often do you feed her? If this is after a long break between her eating and it is right before or right around the time that you are going to feed her, she may just be hungry. Lots of dogs that get fed only once or twice a day cough up frothy white mucus when they get hungry. It's just like you getting nauseous when you haven't eaten. If there is nothing in your tummy then that is what would come out. You might try feeding her more often and see if it goes away.
