Itchy Dog, No fleas, What should i do?

My Beagle, Missy, is 16 years old. She is itching and chewing herself constantly! She has open sores on her lower back and belly. Whenever we give her a flea bath, it seems to give her dry skin and make her chewing worse. It looks (and feels) like she has a tumor-like bump on her lower back. We are afraid, that if we take her to the vet, that they will say that we have to put her down. I dont know what to do! Please help!

the itching could be due to allergies. What kind of food do you have her on? and the tumor like bump could be a cyst or mass of some sort. I would take her to the vet to get her checked out. That is best thing you should do for her. And you do have to realize 16 yrs is old for a dog.

The above poster is right it may just be something as simple as allergies. Take her to the vet just to see what is going on. The vet will most likely NOT say she must be put down instead he will give you the dogs diagnosis and give you your options from there. Putting the dog to sleep is your personal decision not the veterinarians; he can only guide you with whatever the outcome may be.

actually what she needs is to See the vet. They won't take her away, at the most they will lecture you on what to do the next time she is sick.
She most likely has an infection which has become severe from no medical attention. Take her to the vet today., please.
Flea shampoos are not good for dogs who have a medical condition, open wounds, and mange.
I would not put anything on her skin or body, just take her to the vet's office pronto.
They will help her.

I also have a beagle named Missy! Same symptoms as yours (w/o the bump). Vet said grass allergies so she is on med daily. Works like magic! No more scratching, licking, smelly coat, redness, etc. Med was not very expensive at all. Aren't beagles wonderful!

Yes the itching and chewing may be due to allergies (food or environmental), or yes possibly due to an underlying issue. The simplest thing to try first is a new shampoo and spray designed to help with allergies. I personally really like PETfection Puppy Suds and Deodorizer/Allergy Spray. Both will help with dry skin, itchiness, any redness, sores, and pet dander. They also offer a Hot Spots/Wound Spray you can apply just to the open sores which will heal them up within a couple days. All of PETfection products are 100% Organic and Non Toxic, so you don't have to worry about a chemical also irritating her skin. You can check them out at www.myPETfection.com. Good luck! Hope this helps.
