Itchy dachshund in the summertime

Every summer my poor old dachshund gets extremely itchy skin. She scratches her skin raw and there's no stopping her. I think its probably due to being outside more than usual and she loves it out there so id hate to keep her in. since it's only in the summer, I doubt it would be a food allergy.
Has anyone had a problem like this? and if so did you find a solution?
Thanks!

1st off please don't let your vet put her on prednisone. Horrible stuff that almost killed my older doxie. I have one younger red doxie that has the same problem. Think he is allergic to summer LOL. As soon as it gets warm just walking in the grass makes him crazy scratching. I now use Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (Kroger sells it). You can google it to check out benefits. I bathe him 1 or 2x a week with mild baby shampoo then pour the vinegar all over him & don't rinse out - just pat dry. Also, keep a spray bottle with the vinegar & water mixed and spray him all over with that when he's scratching & he stops immediately. It's worked wonders. Also I add tsp of this vinegar in all the dogs waterbowls which seems to really be helping with ticks & fleas! Good luck with your baby. Hope this might help - its also cheap & all natural.

Sounds like a seasonal allergy, Benadryl would help, also Curcumin would help quench the histamine that likely is making her itchy. My holistic vet also suggested regular baths in plain unscented glycerin shampoo from a health food store. If she scratches her skin raw there is a good spray called "Hot Spot Itch Spray". It will not block the allergy but it will treat the sore.

Hot Spot Itch Relief Spray with Tea Tree Oil & Soothing Aloe for DOGS uses Tea Tree Oil and other natural ingredients to provide relief from itching, scratching and sore skin caused by flea and pollen allergy dermatitis, and other skin problems. This is the one I use on my Golden. Good Luck.
