if a dog mates 1 time and becomes pregnant, will she only have 1 puppy
We rescued our chihuahua mix from a family movinging into an apartment that wouldn't allow dogs. After having her 3 weeks, we discovered she is pregnant, verified by the vet. Checking back with the previous owners, the neighbor stated his dog had mated with her (only one time that they know of). Can she have more than 1 puppy from 1 mating?

yes... it is most likely she will have more than one. When we are shipping semen to females we only ever do it once and have litters up to 12 or more with the labradors. It is totally dependent on when she ovulated, not as much as when she was bred since the sperm live up to 72 hours inside her and millions of sperm are in each ejactulate.

Do you have any idea of what type of dog she was bred with? If it was a larger dog, you might need to take the chihuahua to the vet for a check up. They may be able to determine the size of the pups. If they are too large, it could kill the mommy dog. :o(
It is more than likely that she will have more than one pup, it doesn't matter if she mated only once.
Either way, regular vet visits during the pregnacy may help ward off unforseen problems at delivery.
Good luck!!!

yep for sure. A dog can have as many as the eggs that are there to be fertilized, any where from 1 pup to 15 babies. For tiny dogs maybe one to 8 or so. Depends....

Dogs release several eggs in their heat cycle and the male provides thousands of sperm, so yes they can have more than one puppy from one mating. Dogs usually have more than one.
How big is the previous owner's dog? If he is bigger than her, I strongly encourage you to have a spay-abort done ASAP--Chihuahuas need C-sections a lot anyway, but breeding with a large male can produce puppies too large to whelp normally. If the puppy(s) is/are large enough, her uterus could even rupture during pregnancy.
It's not that I'm against puppies (and I am actually very strongly against abortion), but your dog's life could be in danger here. Breeding even under the best circumstances is pretty risky for both mother and pups in the first place.

I second all the other posters.
One note, as a chihuahua MIX, she might be bigger, which could mean that the pups will come out fine, without a C-section.
Good luck, and congrats on saving the poor girl from that owner!

She can absolutely have more than one. But it is not uncommon for chihuahuas to have only 1 pup.

If Chihuahua births were that dangerous the breed would not be around anymore. I guarantee this breed is able to exist in nature (where there aren’t regular C-sections) so unless your vet tells you to be concerned then don’t worry about it at all. I have a Chihuahua and we will be breeding her and this was the advice given to me (by my vet).
I know this doesn’t answer your question I just didn't want you to be worrying with what has been written.
