You’re probably going to get as many opinions, as there are Users on this Forum ! :D

There are several Websites, which have a “Decision Guide” that can help you. You just fill out the cells, they already know what kinds of Dogs are amenable to your/those specific needs, and make recommendations (several probably) of Breeds which are best suited for you/your situation.

Here are several Sites, which have this questionnaire...

Simple- get whatever kind of dog appeals to you the most, then don't leave it outside unsupervised, and practice boundary training.

Toy-sized breeds (like Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Yorkies, etc) are most likely to be physically unable to jump it, but large-breed dogs can certainly be TRAINED not to jump it, and dogs shouldn't be left outside unsupervised anyway. My neighbor once had a 6-foot wooden fence, a Pug, and a Chihuahua. The dogs were left outside and got out through a hole under the fence, and they never found the poor Pug!

It depends on your training. I kept a collie mix in with a fence that he could look over, but he never tryed to jump it. And this is the same dog that would take 5 steps at a time when going upstairs. Smaller dogs can jump very high also. My westie mix has jumped up on the table that is 30 inches high. so train g is the key to whatever you get.

You would have to train the dog not to jump. Puppies tend to jump and need to be corrected. You will need to train this dog NOT to jump. I recommend getting a smaller dog since most medium and large dogs would easily be able to jump your fence. However, this doesn't mean that small dogs won't jump your fence either. Never leave a dog unsupervised outside alone.

The Cocker Spaniel is a medium sized dog but it is great with both dogs and children IF properly trained and socialized like any other dog should be. Please educate yourself and research the Cocker Spaniel before deciding on getting one if you choose to get one. Check out these sites for more information on the Cocker Spaniel -

you will probably want a dog thats smaller or one that isnt prone to jumping(though that can be trained out of all dogs.)
