My last guy had a cruciate operation at 12. He had almost 4 more years of life. Discuss your options with your vet, & good luck.

My Bernese blew his ACL and had a TPLO done when he was 4 years old. I got two different practices input and our breeder's before proceeding. use of a custom brace was not suggested - even on the blogs I researched at that time. Maybe custom orthopedic braces weren't available, effective or "known"? In the last year or so braces appear to be more main stream.
He is now 9 years old and doing well. The TPLO has a lengthy recovery and returned the quality of his life.
That being stated, if we were faced with an ACL issue today,I would explore all options, especially less invasive. Given his age and lifestyle I would consider using a custom orthopedic brace. Ultimately, any decision would be with our vet's & breeder's input.
Age is a factor however so is lifestyle. At 9, our boy tires more quickly than at 5. Walks are shorter but you know what I don't have the energy I did at 20 either :)
Best wishes - I hope this helps
