Dogs do miss their house-mates when they pass away. I, personally, will never have just one dog. I think they need companionship like we do. When our Golden passed away, Jax was depressed. That's when we got Kali. She perked right up when we brought her home. Good Luck!

How is he doing? Does he seem lonely at all? Some dogs mourn the passing of their companions, others go on like nothing is different.

Keep in mind, it's difficult and often ill-considered to get a dog as a "friend" for another dog. Sometimes it works out well, but other times, the new dog and old dog don't bond, or even dislike each other and create more problems. If Aspen is doing fine, I'd leave the situation as it is.

Are you ready for a new dog also? I would not just run out a get a dog just to have one. Take your time, find one you really want, one that will fit in with the older dog. Unless the dog is very depressed, I would not rush out at this time unless you know for sure it is what you want.
