Praise, healthy feeding, always provide them with fresh water in clean bowls, safe play toys, make sure their environment is safe from any hazards, such as choking or eating poisonous substances etc, regular visits to the Vet and as soon as something doesn't seem right please contact your Vet, have all their vaccinations and spay and neuter them as soon as 6 months of age, positive discipline.. such as rewards. Plenty of Exercise and fresh air, don't let them be exposed to harsh elements such as extreme heat or cold and wet conditions, make sure they cannot escape from whever they are, realize they are intelligent animals but they aren't humans and we cannot expect them to act like them. Please work with them if they have behavior problems and don't dispose of them like a piece of garbage if they aren't perfect, I have a Yorkie who will be a year on New Year's Eve and she has so many behavior problems and I told my husband a lot of people would have already taken her to a pound bynow.. but just like a child who may have problems we don't give up on them we work with them and then if they still have problems we do the best we can and accept them the way they are but don't ever give up. Most of all unconditional love.... the way they love us and realize they truly are man's and woman's best friend...

You just know when your dog is happy. The way they look at you or tilt their heads when they are trying to get what your saying. The way they greet you at the door, even when you just go get the mail. The way you know there is no other place they want to be than laying at your feet or snuggling on the sofa. The way they do crazy, silly things to get you to smile or lay their head in your lap when your feeling sad. I could go on and on, but space is limited.
How to raise a happy puppy, positive training, committment, consistancy and lots of love.

Exercise every day is a big factor. It burns energy, curiosity, gives you bonding time, and a slightly tired dog doesn't bark @ the outside world so much is if is out in it every day.
The next step is just love, affection, attention, and boundaries so they know who's the boss. If your dog is a part of your family in any way, she's happy. My dog smiles, dances when I come home, and searches me out if I'm out of the room too long. Gotta love devotion like that!

I like Deogie's answer. You just know from the way they act and what they do. And if they always have a smile on their face and always laughing.
