How to tell if my dog has had her first heat?

she is 9mth old and a cross between german shepard and golden retriever.
I am being forced into having her spayed but i want to wait untill she has had her first heat.

It should be coming any day now if it hasn't already. You will be able to tell by her lady bits being very big and swollen looking and the blood spotted everywhere. When she starts getting swollen or when male dogs start to show A LOT of interest watch her closely. They know when its coming.

A Dog in heat is by no means a fun thing and unless you're planning to breed, which I hope not, from one mixed-dog owner to another, It will make you so much happier and her so much healthier just to get her fixed.

You're better off getting her spayed before hand but definitely DO NOT get her spayed during the heat or when you think its going to start. It will kill her so you'll have to wait until its done.

One more thing: A female that isn't fixed can be dangerous for the other dogs in the neighborhood. There will be more dog fights and more dogs will die looking for your female. Keep her indoors and don't take many walks or long walks. Dogs will travel over a mile if they smell her.
