63 days is the number of days they are pregnant.Although, with the latter part, most of the time, a c-section will be done anywhere from the 62-64 day, if there are no signs that the dog is going into labor.

Actually, I have had live whelps over the years at anywhere from 58 to 65 days... all perfectly normal.
C-sections are not routinely done if a dog reaches 63 days... just like people, many dogs carry their pups a few days longer or a few days less, and a good breeder and/or a good vet will recognize when something is not right and it is time for a c-section, not just go ahead and do it. Both Ultrasound and xray can be utilized to determine if a late bitch is ready to whelp the litter and a c-section is advised, or if it is just time to wait a few days longer. C-sections are used by responsible vets as a last resort only...they are dangerous and risky both to the dam and the whelps.
The length of gestation is determined by when the eggs get fertilized...that can happen up to 7 days AFTER the female is bred, which would add another whole week onto the expected day of whelping if you were counting from the breeding date and not that date.

A female dog stays pregnant for 63 days. If your dog is pregnant and/or if you're breeding your dogs, please research and educate yourself on breeding before you breed!
