It depends on the dog. If you're looking for a puppy, you want to be sure you can meet the dam and sire and that the breeder mentions breeding for temperament in addition to conformation to breed standards and working abilities. If you're looking for an adult dog, you want to know with whom the dog has been socialized. Many dogs who haven't been around a lot of small children are perfectly content with small children. Some aren't. It's also really important to teach children how to interact respectfully with dogs.
