HOW DO YOU MAKE THE SMELL GO AWAY?
I HAVE A KING SHEPHERD. HE WEIGHS ROUGHLY 100LBS. HE HAS THE WORST SMELLING GAS AND TOOTS ONE AFTER ANOTHER NON-STOP. I HAVE CHANGED HIS FOOD BRAND A FEW TIMES. HE IS ON THE BEST, MOST EXPENSIVE KIBBLE BRANDS CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET...EVO (GRAIN FREE), ORIJEN (GRAIN FREE), AND/OR TIMBERWOLF ORGANICS. THEY ARE ALL 70+ BUCKS A 29.SOMETHING LB BAG. I DON'T THINK HE SHOULD BE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. HIS BODY ALSO SMELLS. FOR EXAMPLE, SOMETIMES I WILL SMELL HIS MUZZLE AND IT IS SO RAUNCHY I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT. I'LL BATHE HIM AND REALLY SCRUB THE AREAS THAT COME OFF THE WORST AND THEY WILL BE SOMEWHAT MASKED BY THE SMELL BUT THEY COME BACK JUST AS STRONG SOONER THAN THEY SHOULD. MY HUSBAND AND I NOTICED THAT HE FARTS MORE AFTER HUMAN FOOD IS EATEN SO WE CUT BACK ALOT!!! HE ALSO IS A WATER DRINKER. CAN'T GET ENOUGH. NOT THAT HE DRINKS FASTER THAN NORMAL BUT JUST A LARGER QUANTATY THAN I WOULD GUESS IS NORMAL. CAN YOU GIVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? IT'S REAL BAD HENCE ALL CAPITAL LETTERS!!

Hi Duke,
It's good that you're staying away from the grain-heavy foods, especially those with corn, wheat, soy, and gluten. Some people who feed their dogs a raw diet say that they don't have as much gas, so that might be something to investigate (there is a Dogster forum on feeding raw). Changing food too frequently can cause diarrhea and gassiness, so when you're trying something new, switch over slowly and stay on the new food for a couple of weeks before trying the next one.
I'm wondering if there is something going on health-wise, such as a "bloom" of Candida Albicans (yeast) in your gut. The heavy water-drinking could be indicative of a more serious internal illness, such as diabetes or cancer. But of course, we Dogsters have no way of knowing, just guessing.
When was the last time you saw the vet? Did he/she take a stool sample? I would start with the vet before tweaking the food. Good luck!

Agree about the vet. Big dogs need lots of water though. As well as having his skin checked for yeast have blood and urine testing especially if his first morning urine is pale. Stinky, lots of water and pale dilute urine could point to a problem.
Sassy never tooted but she was stinky. I always fed her good food too. Since she is much less stinky on her home cooked food with only a few ingredients I am thinking a food sensitivity could have been part of it. All those grain free foods are great but the companies throw everything but the kitchen sink in there. Look for a food with limited ingredients for allergic dogs like Wellness Simple Solutions, Natural Balance and California Naturals. I don't think there are any without grains though.
Without testing to see if the dog is healthy I wouldn't put him on raw. The bone is very bad for dogs with kidney problems.

I don't know which formulas you are feeding from the various foods you mentioned, but look at the ingredients for each one and see what they have in common, particularly by way of protein source. I'm thinking it's probably chicken.
You could A) Try a diet WITH grain in it. B) Try a novel protein source, like Orijen 6 Fresh Fish instead of the regular stuff. Try something you haven't tried before. Also, try adding probiotics to increase the good flora in his gut. Extra water drinking is common in dogs fed high protein foods, it's their way of making up for what is no longer in the meat, and it's fine.
Also, keep in mind, it can take up to 6 weeks to get whatever is causing the problem out of his system, so don't give up too early. And stop the human food altogether for now so you can see if it really is the kibble or the human food that is causing it.
