How do I choose a good food?
My Toy Poodle, Jet, doesn't seem to enjoy Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy Food. I know that I have to introduce new food gradually, and I was thinking about Iams Small Breed Puppy Food, and, of course, soon Small Breed Adult and then Senior Food. What do you feed your dog and why? I would like to feed my dog a food that is recommended by dog lovers, vets, dog owners, and any other people. I also want it to have no by-products in any of the first five or six ingredients. Sorry I am being so precise, but I want my dog to live a long, happy, tasty life! Thank you for any help!

Yep, Eukanuba is usually considered "the best of the worst" along with Purina ONE and Nutro.
Heres some great brands: Blue Buffalo, Merrick, Taste Of The Wild, Fromm, VeRUS, Natural Balance, Wellness, Royal Canin (Not the best, a tad overpriced) Solid Gold, Ziwi Peak, Canidae, Evo, Innova, Breeders Choice (Avoderm and Pinnacle) and California Natural just to name a few.
Ones to avoid at all costs: Science Diet, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Nutro, Ol' Roy, Pedigree, Bil-Jac, Mighty Dog, and Cesar.
Good luck!

Most commercial foods are not good. I toss this in my head all the time.
I worry about my dog's health more than my own sometimes.
And I am about to go to raw again.
Personally I would never feed Iams. But, that's me. I think holistic is the way to for now.
But, yes I share your concerns.:)

The net is packed full of nonsense about dog food. Most of what you read is speculation backed only by junk science and marketing hype. Consumer Reports recently did a big survey of vets. A large majority said there was no advantage to premium foods. Actually vets may know less about dog food than the large service dog schools. They all feed common brands, Iams is the most common, but including Pro Plan and science diet.
If the dog never did eat very well, and has seen the vet since the problem existed, you may be over feeding it. A vet check still won't hurt. Many dogs will snarf down more than is good for them and look for more. Others refuse to eat more than than they need. Evaluate the dog as illustrated in this link, www.longliveyourdog.com You may want the vet to confirm your judgment. Adjust the dogs food and exercise as needed to reach its ideal body condition.

I HAVE THE PERFECT THING FOR YOU!!!! My babies are just like my children so i want the best for them just like you do for yours. So i too was searching forever for the best thing out there.
I have 2 small babies, and they are both VERY picky. I was told by my vet to try Purina Pro Plan Select, and i did, it smells good to me, and they went crazy over it. They absolutely LOVE it. It is an all natural dog food. You have to get the select tho not just the pro plan.
Im telling you this is the BEST one for my babies and i promise you will think so too.
Let me know if you try this and how it worked out for you and them. I promise its a keeper. :-D GOOD LUCK.
