how can you tell what type of dog you have?

as in breed or mixes

Well...this answer depends on where you got your dog.

If he's from an animal shelter and you don't know his history, you usually go with a best guess. The shelter workers usually make this guess for you, although they are not always necessarily correct.

If the dog came from a breeder, they usually know what breed he is. But even then, you have breeders who aren't always honest.

There are also DNA tests, but they aren't necessarily 100% accurate and are pretty expensive.

You can pick up a breed testing kit at either petsmart or petco if you want to spend the money to find out just what your dog is.
