How can my mom get me to drop toys?
I'm a stubborn Newf who loves to steal toys at the dog park. My mom tries to get me to drop them but I love to hang on to them with all my slobbery might. It's fine and dandy ... until the original owner wants it back.
I'm not food driven at all; she's tried trading me biljacs, cheese ... even dried liver treats! But I want nothing to do with them. I'll even turn down tug, my favorite game, if it means I get to keep the stolen toy.
So, *she's* looking for suggestion, even though *I* don't mind if you don't give any ... ;-)

I agree with Ella, practice at home. If she's in a play mode and grabs one of her toys, give her the "drop it" command and when she does, treat and praise. Do that until you think you never want to hear the words "drop it" ever again. That way Xander knows you mean business when you give the command at the dog park.
Also, have you tried some yummy chicken or turkey leg meat as a treat? Try something that taps into their "meaty" side. Worth a try.

Does Xander have another toy that would be just as enticing as the one he has in his mouth? If so, tried to trade that for the stolen toy, sometimes trading a toy for another toy is just as good as food and since you have already tried that, it might be good to try this. But I agree with the other answers, try it at home first and then work at trying it elsewhere.

You can use treats or another toy for this method. When she's playing with her toy and you want him to drop it, offer a treast or another toy in exchange. When he see's the other toy or treat say drop it. If he drops the current toy to get what your offering him, praise him and give him either the other toy or the treat. Once perfected, try limiting the treats where he gets littler pieces or none at all even. Just make sure he gets lots of praise. Once he knows this perfectly, you could teach him to come hwen called with his toy in his mouth. Then when he brings it tell him to drop it which wil turn into a game of fetch if not already taught!
Hope this helps!
