how can I stop my dog from chewing on her dew claws?

My redbone hound chews her dew claws. Is this harmful? It seems like she chews really hard and the nails are ragged. She doesn't do it all the time but I'm concerned.

If the dew claw does not get trimmed it can get too long and crack or split. She is trying to take care of it herself. I don't cut nails any more, I use a cordless Dremel tool. The dogs hated the clippers, but have learned to enjoy the Dremel as it does not hurt and smooths the nails leaving no chips, splits, splinters to catch on anything.
