Help about renaming new puppy?
I am collecting my new puppy on saturday, he's a mixed breed called monty, between 11-12 weeks. i don't feel it suits him and would like to change it to leo. my question is, how would i go about changing his name and is it too late?
the breeder has already taught him to sit so i wonder if he would be confused coming to his new home with a new name. from what i've read, just keep using the new name for postitive association, or use the old name and new together, then eventually drop the old one.
in your opinion, is this realistic and how difficult will it be? which method is more effective? i've read about people changing their puppy's names, but my friend who is an experienced dog owner told me he may struggle as he's almost 12 weeks old and knows his name. any advice please? the puppy is coming from a very loving home and i know it will be traumatic for him, i don't want to upset him further by making him confused!
p.s. i am a first time dog owner, if this makes any difference.

It is NEVER too late to change a dog's name. Think of all the shelter dogs who've had their names changed in middle age. Sometimes because their old name is unknown, sometimes because the new owner wants a fresh start. These dogs have no trouble learning a new name if the owner is positive and consistent about using it.
My advice is don't call him by the old name at all- don't even think of him as "Monty", only think of him as Leo. Say his name to him as often as you can when you get him, and reward him for responding to it (with treats or playtime or affection) and you'll have a strong response in no time at all.
And stop thinking of the transition as being traumatic for him. Yes, he'll be a little confused and lonely at first, but a well-raised, socialized puppy should be confident and ready to bond with you, not pining for his old home. Dogs live in the moment. Think of it as an exciting new adventure for him, not a horrible trauma and he'll be better off.
