Flat Coated Retrievers old style vs new

What is the difference between an "old style" flat coated retriever and a new style? I recently saw pictures on Facebook where people were posting old pictures of flat coats of a more or less historical nature. Does this refer to the old pictures of famous flat coats, or does it refer to a different body style or look compared to current flat coats?
