First Heat, When to spay?
Iris is a 6mo. Akita/Pit. Does anyone know when she may have her first heat? We are discussing when to get her spayed, we were going to do it soon, but since she was a very sick puppy and the runt of her litter, we kind of wanted to wait a little longer, perhaps AFTER her 1st heat. We are not going to breed and are not irresponsible, so please no lectures like I found while searching the forums for answers. Thanks. :)

I'm sorry she hasn't been well.
I would of course not want a sick puppy to go through surgery. I'm sure the Vet would advise against it as well.
As for when she may have her first heat, any time in the next 3-4 months, she could go into heat today, or not for a while. Pits usually start earlier, Akitas later, she may fall anywhere....
I personally wouldn't wait for her first heat, but that would be my choice and I will not impose...I'd just be nervous.
If you and your Vet agree she is healthy and has most of her growning done - then it's a good time to spay.
Very cute photos!
P.S. I hope your neighbors spay their Pit!

first heats can come as early as 4 months.
I would say if she is healthy and well adjusted , to do it.
I also think in general that about 6-9 months is a good age to do it before it occurs. ;) talk with your vet they should be able to rest any doubts or fears for you. good luck.

Wait at least a month after her heat cycle is over. This will allow the inflammation in her body to go down and return to normal. If you were to spay while she is inflamed it can make the surgery worse and lead to complications with healing and scar tissue.
