first hand experinece from Akita owner, please

Have you managed to socialize your Akita to be friendly in groups of strangers on a regular basis?

The list does not allow me to post again on this thread, so please answer this if you can and do not ask for more info from me or give me general Akita personality traits. This is a specific training question.

Your best bet is to go over to the behavior and training forum and ask this there... these are just answers... no one can respond more than once, including you. In the forum you have a better chance of getting the type of information you are looking for since you have the ability to ask for more information and/or provide more information.

I was pet sitting a 7 yr old 100 lb akita named kyta. She was ok around people if they were nice, but the owner was never able to socialize her with other animals. He said she killed 2 cats when she was 2 yrs old. She just pulled so hard on a leash that he let go and she attacked. He said he spent thousands on personal training and she just does not well with other animals.

I have. I have a 6 year old female Akita. Sweet as can be but all of the character traits of a true akita. She's not so much accepting of other dogs but as long as people aren't threatening, she is awesome. She loves the attention. She wasn't always like this. I made the mistake of not socializing her as a puppy so it took her some time to get used to people out in the world. After many walks, outings, and hikes, she enjoys being out and about amongst all the people. We took her to this outdoor wildlife fair once. There were lots of families and children there whom all were running up to her and petting her and kissing her. She was loving it. she is so sweet and I know in my heart that she would never do anything mean unless threatened or provoked. I think she loves people and is learning that more and more as she gets out around them. I truly think socialization is key. But it takes time to get there. There's more I could tell about my sweet akita by not enought room here. :)

I have had my Akita for 11 years now and he has been socialized with my other dog and two cats. One day a little chiua ua got into my yard with both my dogs. Neither one of my dogs attacked it. I then moved to a new neighborhood where one of my neighbors let his little dog wander up to the fence, neither one of my dogs acted up. But my Akita is not socialized with people and is agressive to anyone who comes near me or whom he sees as a threat.
