Dug a huge hole in backyard how do i stop him

my pibble is digging this huge hole in the backyard we have scolded him several time and he keeps doing it. how do i stop him from making it bigger? my boyfriend thinks if he fills the hole that wont stop him just make him want to do it more. he has never done this before until about a month ago when grandma left him outside for a long time and he broke his chain and was out in the front yard in the shade. i do not know if the hole digging and being let out were related or not.

Sometimes dogs dig holes to lay in them because it's cool. Sometimes they dig when they are bored or lonely. If any one of those reasons is the case, then it will be difficult to stop him, especially if he's in the sun. He needs shade. It's inhumane to leave him in the sun. Try giving him things to do like , a kiddie pool and toys.

Kali is correct.
The first time it may have been to escape the heat. Now it also is a way of releasing his frustration.
The dog needs lot of exercise. Is he getting leash walks? A tired dog doesn't dig, it sleeps.

Supervise him in the yard so he gets some play time and you can redirect him if he goes for the hole.

Dogs are perpetual toddlers. If it's too much trouble, find him a new home and don't get another dog.
