I would just make sure you have the nails cut frequently instead of put her thru the pain of surgery. Speaking of cutting nails, Guest has it backward when they said, "Use dog nail clippers that look like a guillotine rather than ones that look like pliers. This type of clipper puts less pressure on the nail and cuts easier." Actually, a Guillotine nail clipper uses the pressure method, just like a real guillotine...the cutting edge meets a solid edge and basically crushes the nail against the cutting edge. Plier or scissor type clippers have a cutting edge on BOTH sides which effectively cuts the nail rather than crushes it.

Removing dewclaws DOES hurt... it is amputating the entire toe!! There is a fairly long recovery period when the dog must wear an e-collar to prevent chewing and removing the sutures. A less invasive alternative is to have the nails trimmed by a groomer every 6 weeks or so... MUCH cheaper, too!!!!

Dachshunds are very strong and you don’t want to cut them if they jerk away. Ask someone to hold them on their back with their head under their chin or on their chest. Use dog nail clippers that look like a guillotine rather than ones that look like pliers. This type of clipper puts less pressure on the nail and cuts easier. These types of clippers are available at your closest pet store. Look at the nail if it is a white nail you will see a pink vein running through it, this is called the quick. You do not want to cut the quick of the nail. This causes the dog pain and can cause bleeding. If this does happen by accident then use some styptic powder on it. You can purchase this product at any pest store. If the dog’s nails are black this task is a little trickier. Trim just the tips of the nails, a little at a time. If you do not feel comfortable doing this take your Dachshund to the groomers or your vet.

If the claws are being injured by catching on the carpet I would reccomend surgical removal. The vet will do the removal under anesthesia and can provide pain pills until its finished healing. At least this way the dog will not accidentally tear the claw causing pain and possibly an emergency visit to the vet.
