Do you think I would qualify for a psd?

I'm 14 and I have horrible anxiety/anxiety attacks, because of this I have a horrible time going to school. It also makes me unable to go away from home, go to stores, and going in a open area. I'm taking therapy and medication but I need something that can help me as soon as possible. So I was wondering if a PSD would be good for me.

Hi there!
I'm not an expert on this, so I suggest you go check out the Service and Therapy Dogs forum on Dogster- it's a good source of info and has many regular posters who use service dogs. Some other resources might be the Psychiatric Service Dog Society, and Please Don't Pet Me.

You have to understand, that if you have a service dog, you will get even MORE attention in public than you do now, and that could be very stressful. Also, just having a dog to make you feel better doesn't make it a service dog- it must be trained to do specific work/tasks (things you cannot do yourself) for your individual disability. An animal that simply makes you feel better, but doesn't do a specific job is actually an Emotional Support Animal and is in a different legal category.

But, like I say, I'm no expert, so go consult the real deal before making your decision.

If you're getting professional help for anxiety, it would be a good idea to pose the idea of a therapy dog to your therapist. He or she (and your family) will be more likely to go for it if you've done your homework, so I'd check out the Dogster forum and do an Internet search to see what information is out there.

Best of luck!
