Crate Training a 2 yr Retriever mix

We adopted a dog about a week ago and she has been fine being left along for up to three hours just in our bedroom, not in the crate. Today I went back to work (just for 5 hours, a shortened day) and the carpet along the door was torn up. We are going to have to put her in the crate when I go to work. I am looking for some tips to crate training. I understand that making it fun is an important thing, but the thing is that she doesn't like kong toys or chew toys at all. So I am not really sure how to make it fun for her.

Right now she is in the crate, getting a little experience before tomorrow, and I am in the other room and I can hear her whining. Is there a way to prevent that? Just need some tips for a first time dog owner.

The key with crate training or any training for that matter is consistency.. Put her/him in the crate, the moment they STOP crying go and let them out! The key is to reward them for good behavior. Ignore the bad and praise the good! If he/she is crying then just ignore them... That means no talking to them, no saying it's ok, nothing... He/she will eventually adjust and see the crate is not a bad place and start going into it without a fight...
