can shiba inu mix breeds be safe around young children?
i am looking at getting a shiba inu mix from my local shelter...He is great but I want thoughts of others before I bring him home. Will his attitude change towards them?

I'd ask the animal shelter workers about it as they are at least somewhat familiar with the dog's general behavior and how he generally behaves around small children.

NO dog is totally safe around children. You must always supervise when they are together. Ask the shelter staff what his temperament is like. If the dog is an adult he most likely will not change, but it also depends on how much you work with him.

It really depends on the individual dog, not the breed.
Shiba's can be good with children, but the best situation is if they grew up around children from a young age. But like a previous poster said, you should NEVER leave any child alone with any dog. Find out the dog's personality and then meet the dog yourself. If he seems friendly, try to bring your children to meet him BEFORE you decide whether or not to bring him home.

I agree with all these posts bring your kids in to see how the dog reacts to you kids, and ask the shelter about his behavior. You should also ask the shelter their best guest on what other breed he is so you can do some research on the other breed as well.

Yes, any dog can be safe around children if trained and socialized. However, no dog is safe around children unsupervised. Never leave a dog and a child alone unsupervised.
