Can my dog food be causing the smelly gas?

My Coco eats Merrick's Dog food. Her gas is smelly with a capital S. It is bad. Can the food be causing this?

If so, what advice do you have? I really can't take the smell. Makes me gag. It smells like the food but with a little more of a kick...yuck

Yes, absolutly. Maybe try a different food, or head over to the food forums and discuss this over there, you may get more help that way.

My pup is on Wellness which apparently is one of the better quality foods and he still gets smelly gas once in a while.

Changing food won't solve the problem if it isn't the problem. Before doing so, I would have the vet do a fecal check. Digestive problems are often cause by parasites and only medicine from the vet will fix it. It is even more likely if you aren't using a flea or heartworm remedy that also controls worms. Most of them control at least some, but not all worms and other parasites.

If the vet doesn't find anything, switching to a food with different ingredients may help. Unless your dog is sensitive to something, usually ingredients make little difference. Even then, if your dog is allergic to chicken, changing from a food that uses chicken meal to one using cuts of chicken won't solve the problem.

I have fed 15 different dogs Pro Plan and frequently have visitors eating it. Very few of them have had gas at all. Premium foods aren't the answer.

yes the food can cause gas. I would also be careful of Merrick, they have had a couple of recalls here lately

Along with considering a change of food, as others have said, a spoon full of natural, sugar-free yogurt with his kibble has been noted by many owners I've known to help with bad gas. You can get it in good sized tubs for pretty cheap and the dogs love it.

I would recommend a limited ingredient diet for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Be sure you switch foods slowly over at least a week to ensure you don't upset Cocos tummy.
I recommend trying Nutro Natural Choice Chicken and rice. The food has chicken as the first ingredient and doesn't contain any chicken by-product meal, artificial colors, artificial preservatives, or ground yellow corn that may be found in other foods. The food also contains a minimum of 3.5% linoleic acid to help guarantee skin and coat improvement!
